Mini-Gradebook Assignment
Due Thursday 10/17 at the end of the day.
Sample Mini-Gradebook and Requirements for Year 4 & 5
The point of this is two-fold: with report cards coming up I want students to think about how grades are calculated. I also want them to do a project in Excel that is a system with data in and data out.

878DO NOW: Turn in "Dark Tower" drawing into the red tub. On the back, write one to three sentences on the back explaining what your drawing represents. Be sure your name is on your drawing.
CLASSWORK:
Spend 10 minutes working on Typing Web.
Go to the Computer History Webquest website.

3-Point Perspective Drawing (Dark Tower Assignment)
The Dark Tower assignment gets its name from one of the images I showed the class, but the drawing does not have to be dark, or even of a tower.
I passed out 3-point perspective paper to be used for the drawing. For our purpose, it should be done used upside down (with the copyright info at the bottom.)
Here is the paper we are using:

Fun Excel Spreadsheets #1
Click on these links and download the documents:
We will review them to see different ways Excel can be used.
The following templates are from one of my favorite sites: Vertex42
Gantt Chart
Soccer Templates
Calendar
Simple Budget.
Assignment: follow along and manipulate the spreadsheets the way I did on the projected screen.
(no written homework)
REFLECTION: This activity went well. The conditional formatting had the biggest Wow factor. My objective was to show students that Excel can be used for more than graphs. I believe it succeeded. Year 5 went a little better because I had the links for Vertex all ready to go.

PART II
Secondly, go to some sites and learn about Ishmael Beah and his home country: Sierra Leone. Then I want you to write a reflection on the question:

What do child soldiers experience that is similar to your childhood, and different from your childhood?
Links to online resources:
Ishmael Beah's official Website featuing his book: A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
A link to an excerpt of A Long Way Gone that includes chapter 1.
Allow yourself time to write a good paragraph or two about what you learned from these links.
Turn in your map and reflection into the red tub.
See you next week. Enjoy your long weekend!

How-To Screenshot Project
Good afternoon 10 graders,
I am assigning a new project. I will hand out copies of the How-To Project Instructions in class today.
You may look at one of Mr. Johnson's How to find Computer Sign-up Sheet (one I did for CIS teachers), and look at Prezi example as well: How to Use Formulas in Excel.
These examples give you a general idea of how to do the project. They do not show all the components requrired for your assignemnt.
Enjoy!

Start a Design Folder
The Design Folder (really a binder, as I see it) is a compulsory part of IB technology and design.
Here are the headings of the dividers:

Why Consider Open Source Software
Why doesn't everyone use open source software?
There are a number of great reasons to use open source software, ranging from the fact that such
software is totally free of license cost, that there are no restrictions in how often you can copy and
install the software and that you gain access to software technology your school would not
normally be able to afford. We list a few of these reasons here. By using Open Source software
you can:
1. Save money - all the software is totally free.
2. Save time on license administration - you can install it on as many PCs as you want.
3. Legally copy and distribute software as many times as you like - you can make copies of it for
colleagues.
4. Reduce your school's licensing liabilities - there is no possibility of piracy problems when you
use open source.
5. Save your students money - your students can take all the software home with them, to install
on their home PCs
6. Many open source applications are easy for Mac and Windows users to understand - there are
over 100,000 open source applications available, including almost all of the common desktop
productivity programs, so there is likely to be an application for most needs.
7. Upgrades are free and open source software generally has a very long life spans and is rarely
ever made obsolete. This helps ensure your data and experience with the software stays
meaningful for much longer,
8. Invest money elsewhere - the money you save for your school could be used to purchase new
hardware or for teacher professional development
